Reading Multiple Courts
Sometimes more than one Court Card shows up in the same spread. When that happens, the number of Courts present carries its own meaning, alongside whichever individual cards you've drawn.
Reading multiples like this is actually older than tarot itself. Long before tarot was used for divination, cartomancy used standard playing cards, and readers built up a whole tradition of what certain combinations meant, two of a kind, three of a kind and so on, in the same way you might read a poker hand for meaning rather than just for the game. Tarot inherited this instinct. A single Page tells you one thing, but four Pages in the same spread is its own kind of message entirely.
Number of Pages
Representing the querent or another who has influence on the situation.
Competition for the querent's attention or affection. A social event will be relevant.
A young group of friends. Likely females or feminine energy. Help found in those younger.
Many youngsters involved. A school, classroom or larger family or group. Solution found in new ideas or plans.
Number of Knights
Representing the querent or another who has influence on the situation.
Competition for the querent's attention or affection. Incidental conflict likely.
A young group of friends. Likely males or masculine energy. Sudden changes or unexpected news.
Competition, war, combat. May indicate armed forces. Relevant events will move quickly.
Number of Queens
Representing the querent or another who has influence on the situation.
Competition for the querent's attention or affection. Might also indicate confrontation. Strong female influences.
Strong, close bonds. Likely females or feminine energy. A supportive sisterhood.
Special interest community or organisation. Help and support found in female authority figures.
Number of Kings
Representing the querent or another who has influence on the situation.
Competition for the querent's attention or affection. Might also indicate conference. Strong male influences.
Strong, close bonds. Likely males or masculine energy. A supportive brotherhood.
Special interest community or organisation. Help and support found in male authority figures.
Directionality

Directionality isn't unique to tarot. It shows up across many forms of divination that use cards, tiles or symbols with a visible orientation, and it's worth knowing that how you read it can genuinely depend on how you read.
If your native language reads left to right, facing right generally feels like moving with the flow, forward, toward what's coming. If your native language reads right to left, that same logic flips, facing right can feel like moving against the flow, back toward where the reading began, while facing left is what feels forward. Some languages read top to bottom too, traditional Mongolian being one, and a reader used to that flow might naturally read a vertical spread very differently again, with up and down carrying the weight that left and right carry for the rest of us.
None of this makes one version more correct than another. It just means directionality is shaped by the reader as much as the card, and it's worth staying aware of your own instinct here rather than assuming everyone reads a facing figure the same way you do.
This left and right directionality aligns closely with the active and receptive nature of the elements. For example, the King of Wands is Fire of Fire, a double active combination that suggests a bold, outwardly driven energy. But in the card image, he faces left. This could point to someone who channels that fire into unorthodox methods, is sceptical of mainstream ideas or tends to look to past models or personal experience for direction. Rather than seeing this as a contradiction, it highlights how even active energy can manifest in inward facing or unconventional ways. This extra layer of nuance allows for a richer and more personalised interpretation of the Courts.
In a spread, directionality can also suggest how the Courts are interacting with other cards. A Court facing another card might show direct engagement, influence or attention. If they're facing away, it might suggest withdrawal, disconnection or disregard. Pair this with their elemental energy, active or receptive, to gauge whether the energy is engaging with the situation or turning inward. This can be especially helpful when interpreting dynamics between people or energies present in a reading.
