"The Coming of Bríde" by John Duncan (1917)

The Keeper of the Sacred Flame

Embracing the light of knowledge, healing, and the life-giving energy of the sun, I invoke Brigid, the Exalted One, to foster within us the flames of creativity, protection, and insight.

About Brigid

Brigid, known variously as Bríd, Brighid, or Brigit, is a revered figure in Celtic mythology, celebrated as a triple goddess associated with fire. She governs the Fire of the Forge, emphasising craftsmanship and creation; the Fire of Inspiration, which includes learning, divination, prophecy, and poetry; and the Fire of the Hearth, which covers healing, midwifery, and the art of medicine. Known by titles such as Fiery Arrow, Bright One, and the Exalted One, Brigid's influence is profound and widespread.

Historically, Brigid is seen as a goddess of the Tuatha Dé Danaan, daughter of the Dagda, the Good God, and the Morrigan. Her life is framed by the legendary battles of the Tuatha Dé Danaan against the Fir-Bolgs and later the Fomorians, demonic beings from beneath the sea. Through her marriage to Bres, a prince of the Fomorians, Brigid bore three sons and became a symbol of peace and reconciliation between the two races, despite the tumult of their reign.

Brigid's sorrow from the death of her son Ruadan led to the creation of keening, a traditional form of vocal lament for the dead, marking her not only as a goddess of physical and spiritual sustenance but also of emotional and cultural depth. She heralds the return of spring, symbolising dawn, new beginnings, and the peace that follows divine justice.
