The Wheel of the Year doesn’t just mark the changing seasons, it’s a dance with the elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Tarot readers will recognise each element’s unique vibe, energy, and theme, reflecting our personal journey as we walk through the cycles of life. Working with these elements allows us to connect with nature on a daily basis, creating balance in our physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional bodies.
While Earth, Air, Fire, and Water are familiar in Western traditions, other cultures have their own interpretations of elemental energies, each offering unique perspectives on the world. In Chinese Wu Xing philosophy, for instance, elements like Wood and Metal embody qualities of growth, strength, and transformation, creating a continuous interplay that reflects life’s cycles. Japanese Godai includes Void, which represents the unseen spiritual source of creation, while in Indian Ayurveda, Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether are linked to bodily energies to promote health and balance. For Indigenous American and Polynesian cultures, Earth, Water, Fire, and Air are often seen as living spirits, deeply connected to the land and life. In Yoruba Ifá, elemental forces are represented through Orishas, embodying nature’s aspects and human experience.
These varied frameworks deepen our understanding of the elements and enrich our experience of the Wheel of the Year, reminding us that our journey through the elements is part of a larger, global dance with nature. Connecting with these elements daily can bring us into greater harmony with the world around us.
Let’s explore how each of the elements might show up for us in our everyday lives…
🌱 Earth: Grounding + Stability
Earth’s grounding energy is all about the dark, restful half of the year… think Samhain, Yule, and Imbolc. It’s the force that says, “Slow down, get grounded, and nurture what’s beneath the surface.” If our earth element is too heavy we might feel sluggish and stagnant, too light and we might feel ungrounded and unfocused.
Getting outdoors, walking barefoot, gardening, or cooking a nourishing meal is a great way to ground yourself. Breathing, exercise, physical contact with the earth and nourishing food provides stability, comfort and nutrients.
Earth gives you patience, focus, and clarity. Connecting with earth can look like setting achievable goals and making lists to organise your thoughts and provide a clear path. Tidying and rearranging your environment to create a space of peace and functionality also helps ground and provide purpose.
Grounding meditations and visualisations that help root you to the earth, honour your ancestors, and connect you to your lineage literally place you within your own family tree of existence. This is about feeling solid, worthy, supported and connected.
Earth’s energy is all about nurturing yourself. Slow down, honour your needs, and remind yourself that growth doesn’t need to be rushed. Care for yourself as you would a plant with water, sun, rest and a little patience can go a long way.
Air: Inspiration + Change
Air’s fresh energy comes to life in Imbolc and Ostara. It’s all about new beginnings, ideas, and planting the seeds for what’s to come. Air says, “Open the windows of your mind and let in some fresh inspiration.” When balanced air can have us feeling composed and open to new ideas, whereas an imbalance can leave us feeling worried, discontent and anxious.
Air energises and clears the body, so embrace it with movement. Get a literal breath of fresh air! Spend time outside, move your body, open windows, and let that air flow.
Air is all about inspiration and mental clarity. Brainstorm, set intentions, and let your thoughts flow. Write, dream, and let ideas come without judgment.
Light some incense or spray a fresh scent to bring Air’s energy into your sacred space. Practice breath work, visualisation, or anything that invites openness and invites ideas to flow freely.
Air brings lightness and freedom. Let go of what’s weighing you down emotionally, practice affirmations that lift your spirits, and remind yourself to stay open and curious.
Fire: Passion + Action
Fire blazes at Beltane and Litha, the peak of life’s energy and passion. Fire is all about taking action, creating, transforming and living boldly. It’s that feeling of being alive and going after what you want. Fire in balance presents itself as enthusiasm, intuition and excitement but, when unbalanced it can quickly turn into a hot head, intolerance and agitation.
Fire is all about movement! Dance, exercise, have sex, go for a brisk walk, or just shake things up a bit. Fire wants you to feel alive and present in your body.
Fire is your determination, bringing clarity and focus to your goals. Lean into your passion projects, take bold steps, and remind yourself of the power of creative thinking.
Honour Fire with rituals involving candles, decision-making or envisioning your dreams as flames you’re feeding. Fire is all about courage and drive, so use it to fuel your spiritual practice.
Fire lets you embrace passion, confidence, and joy. Express your emotions, let yourself feel deeply, and give yourself permission to feel the full intensity of life. Fire is about honouring every feeling as a force for growth.
Water: Emotion + Intuition
Water flows through Lammas and Mabon, bringing us into reflection and gratitude as we prepare for the darker half of the year. Water reminds us to look inward, embrace intuition, and let things flow. When water is balanced we feel emotionally stable, content and spiritually connected. When water is unbalanced we can feel emotional instability, indulgent, self-pitying or discomfort.
Allow water to refresh you, soothe your body, and bring calm. Hydrate, take a soothing bath, or spend time near water if you can.
Water is all about reflection and release. Journal, meditate, or just sit with your thoughts without pressure. Water encourages you to process and let go.
Connect with Water in cleansing rituals, dreamwork, or divination. Practice tuning into your intuition and allowing yourself to just be.
Water’s gift is emotional flow. Let yourself feel without judgment, whether it’s joy, sadness, or anything in between. Water invites you to feel deeply and release freely.
Aether/Spirit: Connection + Transcendence
Spirit, or Aether, is the element that holds everything together, showing up in every cycle of the Wheel but particularly during times of transition and introspection like Samhain and Yule. Spirit reminds us of the invisible threads connecting all beings, both seen and unseen. It prompts us to look beyond the physical and tangible, embracing a sense of unity with the world and our place in it. When Spirit is balanced, we feel aligned, connected, and at peace. When unbalanced, we might feel disconnected, empty, or lost, searching for meaning. Working with the Aether element helps us connect with our inner self, ancestors, and the divine.
Spirit’s energy reminds us of the sacred in every moment. It’s an invitation to be present, to honour our inner wisdom, and to feel the connection that binds all life. Working with your Deities, Higher Self, Ancestors or Guides on a daily basis will allow you to ask and receive insight. A few simple starting practices include:
Creating and visiting an elemental altar on a daily basis to connect in with your Spirits, even if its just a case of being present in their honour.
Asking Spirit simple questions of how you might connect with them, what offerings they prefer, what themes they like to support you with and what associations they keep. This knowledge will allow you to build a relationship with them.
The Elements in Everyday Life
The elements are the forces that shape our daily lives. Each day, you might need a little Earth grounding, a spark of Fire, a breath of Air, a flow of Water or a prompt from Spirit.
