Money magic can be very revealing. It shows you how you really feel about worth, exchange and trust. Many are hesitant when it comes to money workings. It can feel too material and mercenary. But in reality it is not about greed or grasping, but the relationship between flow and stewardship, between self-worth and collective care.

It’s no coincidence that so much of our language around money borrows from the element of water. We speak of currencies that flow through channels, of liquidity and cashflow, of frozen assets and rising tides. We store our wealth in banks that, like the banks of a river, shape and contain its movement. We drain resources, pour investments into projects, and watch economies flood or dry up. Even the idea of circulation mirrors the same current. These words reveal an old truth: money behaves like water. It moves, pools or stagnates, nourishes or erodes. When tended with awareness it sustains life. When blocked through fear or hoarding it turns stale. To work magically or practically with money is to learn the art of flow itself.

My elders often reminded me that money is simply another current of life. It wants movement, direction and integrity. When we try to clutch or control it, it resists. When we invite it through the open channels of good work, right timing and fair exchange, it begins to move in ways that support both us and our community.

Foundations and Mindset

Before beginning any working, I get clear on what I’m asking for. “Abundance” on its own is too broad. It can arrive as peace, love, work, clients or chaos. As with any magical work, precision and focus is key. I state what I’m calling in and how it should arrive: redirecting the flow of current-sea through me from ethical sources and without harm.

Money workings respond best when rooted in calm and accountability. I cleanse my space, ground myself, and only work when I feel centred, not desperate; another reason why my elders like to schedule money workings consistently each month. A clear head creates clear magic.

Reciprocity is also vital to maintain energetic balance. Whenever money flows in, be sure to send some of that energy outward again. That might be a donation, a tip or a simple gesture of thanks. As a rule I tend to do a working for myself and my family and another at the same time for my community. Magic thrives on movement.

Working with the Moon

Most of my money work happens under the New Moon or just after, not the Full. The New Moon is when the moon turns inward, invisible yet filled with potential. From this point it only increases so it is a great way to start a working that completes on the Full Moon. With the New Moon I start with a pause to refine my intentions. What do I actually need? What am I ready to receive? What conditions or boundaries do I need to set?

I will also pay attention to astrological events that include the beneficial forces of Jupiter for expansion and good fortune, the Moon itself for emotional alignment, and Mercury for trade, contracts, and steady cashflow. Together they bring a balance of faith, flow and function.

Correspondences That Endure

Over the years, I’ve truly come to believe that a working can be done with intention alone if needed. But, if you have the option to go big then I’ve whittled down a handful of correspondences that continue to serve me well.

  • Colours: Green and gold for prosperity; red for attraction and vitality; white to keep things pure and ethical (supportive of situations of financial distress or difficulties).

  • Numbers: Two for doubling; eight for mastery, skill and disciplined increase; nine or ten for a full cycle; thirteen to increase lunar energy.

What matters most is consistency, not complexity. The more often you use a symbol or colour the more attuned it becomes to you and your pattern of work. You can also weave sympathetic or attraction magic through objects you already own that hold worth or memory or that mirror the kind of abundance you wish to cultivate. I’ve used gold rings and inherited coins and once gathered heather from the moors where it grows in wild profusion. Friends have used objects like jade frogs, small golden pyramids and Eastern money pouches collected from their travels. There are no fixed rules, only relationship. The power lies in what the object means to you and the intention you bring to it.

A Bundle of Charms for A Bundle of Money...

A Charm to Attract Money

❝

Use a square of green cloth, filled with borage, lavender, High John the Conqueror Root, and saffron (or any four appropriate herbs), a few crystals of rock salt, and three silver coins. (Dimes, although no longer solid silver, seem to work fine.) Tie with gold and silver thread in eight knots. Carry on your person or hang in an appropriate area to attract money.

— From Starhawk, The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Goddess

I’ve used variations of this charm for years, sometimes changing the herbs or coins depending on the currency I’m working with. It’s simple, tangible magic that focuses intention through every step of making.

Golden Money Spider Wishing Bowl

❝

“If you wish to live and thrive, let the spider stay alive”

— Traditional British folk charm, adapted through oral teaching

Draw a picture of the spider hidden in its web with gold ink on red paper. You can bless the paper with a money drawing oil and incorporate runes and other sigils of wealth and abundance within the web if you so choose. All the while speaking aloud your requests for abundance and financial increase. Place the drawing in a consecrated bowl and whenever the spider comes through for you, feed it with some coins from your purse along with words of gratitude.

This practice is a reminder that prosperity grows best through ongoing relationship and to feed what feeds you.

A Simple Money Drawing Oil

❝

Gently warm an oil such as almond, jojoba or olive with a pinch of cinnamon powder and/or fenugreek seeds for thirteen minutes. Strain and store in a small glass jar.

— Jessica Hart

I use this oil to anoint tools, paperwork or even my hands before pricing new offerings. The scent alone shifts the mind.

Quick Money Drawing Practices

Other small, regular acts that help keep energy flowing include:

  • Whispering your financial goals over alfalfa, burn it, and scatter the ashes around your property.

  • Blowing cinnamon powder through your front door on the New Moon, the first day of the month, or New Year’s Day.

  • Add basil or fenugreek tea to your floor wash for prosperity at home.

  • Keep a bay leaf in your wallet so it is never empty. Another tip from my Grandma is to never gift or keep a wallet empty - they must always have a coin in!

  • Grow a plant with thick large leaves (good for catching flow) where you work or organise business transactions. Place a coin in its soil, water it often, and clean the leaves to encourage flow.

  • Tie a green ribbon around your wallet or business ledger to keep your income evergreen. We also see another reference between money and flow in Titania Hardie’s book Enchantment in which she encourages tying a green ribbon around your tap’s (faucet’s).

I’ve found these small gestures to be surprisingly powerful. The repetition builds rhythm; the rhythm builds presence.

Like all serious magical workings, money magic rarely offers shortcuts but instead creates opportunities for conversation with value itself. The real power lies in how you align your intentions with your actions, where budgeting, invoicing, pricing and generosity each play their part in supporting the flow.

When I treat money as energy rather than enemy, I find it mirrors back the energy I give it. Respectful, clear, and reciprocal. The more I tend to it with care, the more it tends to me.

So much of magic is about remembering that we are in relationship with the world around us. Money is simply one of the ways that relationship moves.
