The Universal Laws are the foundation of many spiritual and magical traditions, particularly Hermeticism, which views the cosmos as a living reflection of divine order. These principles describe how energy, thought and matter interact, showing that creation follows rhythm and correspondence rather than chance. Understanding them helps you see how inner and outer worlds mirror each other, and how your thoughts and intentions influence every layer of reality. In magical practice these laws act as the framework that supports spellwork, divination and manifestation, ensuring that what you create moves in harmony with the wider universe. Think of them as the “cosmic code”, seven guiding principles that shape everything in existence from our thoughts and emotions to the great cycles of nature. Why are they essential to spiritual practice? Because understanding and working with these laws is like holding the keys to a deeper, more aligned life. When we work in harmony with them, we stop feeling like life just happens to us and start seeing how we’re co-creators shaping our path with intention and awareness.

These laws fall into two types. The first three are Higher Immutable Laws and the following four are Lower Mutable Laws. The Higher Laws are unchangeable forces, the great truths that hold everything together. They are the underlying script of the universe, always running in the background. The Lower Mutable Laws are flexible and adaptable. They allow for movement and transformation, giving us the tools to manifest, clear blocks and create a life that feels aligned and true.

Bringing these laws into your practice is not about memorising a cosmic rulebook. It is about recognising how these principles move through your life and learning to work with them consciously. Imagine tapping into a steady current of universal wisdom where your intentions carry weight, your actions flow with purpose and your energy aligns with creation itself. The Universal Laws act as allies, helping you stay grounded and build a spiritual rhythm that feels connected to the very fabric of existence.

Below is a brief overview of the seven Universal Laws. You can find more in-depth information at the bottom of the page. I recommend keeping a note of them, as they appear often throughout the teachings, rituals and practices.

1. The Law of Mentalism (Higher)

All things begin in the mind. Everything we perceive, create and experience starts with thought. “As within, so without” is its essence. Most of us have experienced negative self-talk, those moments of doubt or frustration. This law teaches us that by shifting the direction of our thoughts we can change our reality.

In practice you can use this law by:

  • Scripting or affirmations to focus your thoughts on what you wish to manifest

  • Visualisation to give energy and life to your intentions

  • Meditation to clear mental clutter and align your thinking with your higher self

These three steps appear in practices such as The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron and The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod.

2. The Law of Correspondence (Higher)

“As above, so below. As within, so without.” Patterns repeat across every level of existence. Our outer world mirrors our inner state. The Law of Mentalism begins within, while this one starts without. Small irritations such as dropping your keys or spilling coffee can ripple through your day, changing your energy. Likewise, tidying a space or rearranging your home can restore calm and clarity.

You can use this law by:

  • Reflecting on how inner beliefs shape outer experiences

  • Creating an altar or moodboard that reflects your goals and values

  • Using tools like tarot or scrying to explore your subconscious patterns

I was going to link my favourite tarot deck, but honestly, choosing one felt impossible.

3. The Law of Vibration (Higher)

Everything in the universe vibrates at its own frequency. When you raise your vibration, you align with higher energies and attract positive experiences.

You can work with this law by:

  • Chanting, singing or listening to uplifting music to raise your frequency

  • Surrounding yourself with high-vibration objects, herbs and foods that nurture your energy

  • Keeping a gratitude journal to anchor yourself in appreciation

When you maintain this frequency, life tends to flow more smoothly and synchronicities increase.

4. The Law of Polarity (Lower)

Everything has an opposite. Light and dark, joy and sorrow, expansion and contraction all exist on the same spectrum. Recognising both sides brings balance. Instead of avoiding discomfort, we learn from it and integrate it.

You can practise this law by:

  • Doing shadow work to accept and integrate what you resist

  • Using symbolic rituals that balance opposites such as black and white candles

  • Meditating on duality to find harmony between rest and action

  • Allowing emotions to move through you without judgement

Acknowledging both sides leads to wholeness.

5. The Law of Rhythm (Lower)

Life moves in cycles. The seasons, the moon, the tides and our own energy follow natural rhythms. Modern life often pulls us away from these patterns, but when we realign with them we rediscover balance and wellbeing.

You can use this law by:

  • Setting intentions with the New Moon and releasing during the Waning Moon

  • Observing the Wheel of the Year and marking seasonal changes with reflection or ritual

  • Tracking your own energy levels through the month and adjusting your practice accordingly

This is about returning to flow, not forcing consistency.

6. The Law of Cause and Effect (Lower)

Every action has a consequence. The energy you send out returns in some form. Rather than viewing this as reward or punishment, see it as feedback from the universe. When you act with integrity and mindfulness, you shape outcomes that serve your growth.

You can apply this law by:

  • Acting consciously rather than reacting impulsively

  • Offering kindness or service without expectation

  • Cleansing to release stagnant energy from past actions

  • Speaking affirmations or prayers that direct energy toward your chosen goals

Each choice is a thread in the web of your life. Choose with care.

7. The Law of Gender (Lower)

Masculine and feminine energies exist within all things. Each carries qualities essential for balance. The masculine brings structure and action. The feminine brings intuition and receptivity. When these energies unite, harmony follows.

In practice this might look like:• Honouring both energies in ritual through sun and moon elements• Balancing active intention setting with receptive meditation• Combining assertive and nurturing actions in your self-care

True strength comes from integration. When you hold both within yourself, life feels whole.

When you start to recognise these Universal Laws at work, magic stops feeling abstract. It becomes the living rhythm beneath everything. These principles show that what we call magic is not separate from the natural order but a direct conversation with it. In folk and ritual traditions this conversation takes form through the Laws of Magic, which are earthier and more tactile expressions of the same truths. Where the Universal Laws describe the pattern, the Laws of Magic show us how to move within it. In the next post we will explore these magical laws in practice, tracing how intention, connection and correspondence shift from philosophy into the real and physical work of spellcraft and everyday enchantment.
